A “Participation Award” In The School Of Humility

As an avid enthusiast of lifelong learning, I couldn’t resist sharing my recent misadventure after indulging in “So Awkward: How to Embrace the Embarrassing” on The TED Radio Hour.
Picture this: with over half a century of art education and professional experience under my belt, you’d think I’d have mastered the ropes by now. But nope, I’m still as eager as a rookie, always ready to dive headfirst into new techniques and mediums. So, when I hung up my computer mouse and swapped 3D-printed figurines for molten bronze in a traditional foundry class at our local community college post-retirement, I thought, “Why not?”
Fast forward to the climax of my comedic saga: armed with unwavering confidence in my latest bronze creations, I proudly submitted three sculptures (complete with attached glamour shots) to the student show, all set to support our esteemed foundry/sculpture program. But oh, the irony! Imagine my jaw hitting the floor as I discovered that not a single piece made the cut. Yep, not one!
Oh, the sweet sting of humiliation! It was like being handed a “Participation Award” in the School of Humility. But hey, what’s life without a good laugh at oneself, right? So here I am, embracing the awkwardness and reveling in the hilarity of it all. Who knew retirement could be so entertaining.
